After reviewing footage of the event, experts at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, having reviewed footage of the event, said the meteor was likely a "fireball meteor," meaning that it was a fragment of an asteroid that burns vigorously upon entering Earth’s atmosphere.

'Fireball meteor' seen over western Japan
People in western Japan have reported sightings of a sparkling light racing across the sky on Monday evening.
Experts say it was probably a "fireball" meteor - a piece of an asteroid that ignites upon entering Earth's atmosphere - and any surviving fragments mostly likely ended up in the sea.
A remote controlled camera at Fukuoka airport recorded an object emitting a strong green light, while another camera at Hakata port showed a faint orange light.

Possible 'fireball meteor' spotted in Japanese skies
A mysterious object resembling a ball of fire has been spotted in the sky over western Japan
A number of sightings of a fireball-like object were reported in western Japan on Monday night.
According to the Japan Times, witnesses contacted observatories in Fukuoka, Hiroshima and Ehime prefectures to report sightings of the object.
The newspaper quoted Hidehiko Agata, an associate professor at Japan's National Astronomical Observatory, as saying that it was "highly likely" to be a bolide.
A bolide is defined by Nasa as "an exceptionally bright meteor spectacular enough to be seen over a very wide area".
This footage, which was posted on Japanese channel FNN's YouTube page, was shot using a car's dashboard camera and shows the object racing across the sky.
